Objectives: The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) provides global leadership for a research, training, and education program to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood diseases and enhance the health of all individuals so that they can live longer and more fulfilling lives. To foster research and research training on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of non-neoplastic blood diseases, including anemias, sickle cell disease, thalassemia; biology of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, hematopoietic stem cells and the bone marrow niche, hemophilia and other abnormalities of hemostasis and thrombosis.. Funding encompasses a broad spectrum of hematology research, ranging from hematopoietic stem cell biology to drug development to treat blood diseases, ensuring the adequacy and safety of the nation's blood supply.
