Training Program in Cellular and Molecular Membrane Biology - The future of biomedical science critically depends on cross-disciplinary technical expertise in membrane biology. Membrane-localized receptors are the target for nearly all drug-based therapies. Therefore, scientists with expertise in protein structure-function, electrophysiology, membrane trafficking, and cell membrane physiology are indispensable. To meet this need, we have developed the Training Program in Cellular and Molecular Membrane Biology. Now in its 4th decade, our training program provides innovative interdisciplinary training at the molecular, cell, and systems biology interface at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). Our central tenet is that cell membranes mediate and integrate the cellular and molecular response of the cell to the environment and are thus an essential interface between the cell and its surroundings. The common goal of the participating laboratories is to understand the various roles membranes play in biological systems, stressing their role at the cellular and molecular level and their link to human diseases. We emphasize investigations into how cell function arises from dynamic interactions between membrane proteins and signaling cascades, especially those that depend on ion flux (i.e., Ca2+ or K+). Trainees are selected based on their interests, graduate course grades, recommendations, and previous research experience. Accepted students take specialized upper-level courses in cell and molecular membrane biology, ion channel biophysics, biostatistics, hypothesis testing, and experimental design. This curriculum prepares our trainees for independent research in our faculty’s labs. Training program faculty are well-funded, highly interactive, and devoted to mentoring students studying a broad range of subjects related to membrane biology. Mentors are selected for their interests, extramural support, and commitment to mentoring. Trainees and mentors also participate in enrichment activities, including a student seminar series, an annual retreat, and career development seminars given by distinguished program alum from academia, government, and industry. The University of Maryland School of Medicine generously supports this program through faculty salary contributions, stipends for additional students, and funds for the training program’s regular activities. We enjoy a strong partnership with other NIGMS-supported programs at the UMSOM, including the Medical Scientist Training Program and Initiative for Maximizing Student Development.
