Nebraska Center for Integrated Biomolecular Communication (NCIBC) - PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT Since 2016, the Nebraska Center for Integrated Biomolecular Communication (NCIBC) has made significant strides in advancing the understanding of biomolecular communication pathways—critical systems that regulate cellular functions and coordinate intercellular actions. These pathways are key to deciphering disease mechanisms and developing targeted therapies. In Phases 1 and 2, NCIBC successfully established a vibrant, collaborative biomedical research environment at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) by investing strategically in infrastructure, faculty recruitment, and mentorship. Notably, the Center’s support of early-career Research Project Leaders (RPLs) yielded exceptional outcomes: over $38 million in federal funding secured, 253 publications produced, and a 100% tenure attainment rate. This track record demonstrates NCIBC’s vital role in cultivating the next generation of biomedical researchers and sustaining innovation. Concurrently, NCIBC expanded its core research facilities, enhancing capabilities in lipidomics, metabolomics, proteomics, microscopy, and structural biology. The Center’s investigator community also grew substantially, from 5 to 51 members across 16 UNL academic units, reflecting successful interdisciplinary collaboration. Building on this foundation, Phase 3 aims to propel NCIBC toward greater scientific impact and long-term sustainability by addressing increasingly complex biomedical challenges. Key priorities include recruiting new faculty specializing in biological mass spectrometry, cell signaling, and cell biology to strengthen research expertise. The introduction of Pilot Projects and seed grants will foster early-stage innovative research and expand Center membership, promoting high-impact studies of complex diseases from diverse disciplinary angles. A critical structural advancement involves integrating the Systems Biology Core and Light and Electron Microscopy Core into a unified Biomolecular Imaging, Omics, and Molecular Exploration (BIOME) Core. This consolidation will enhance efficiency, reduce redundancies, and provide cutting-edge services in omics, microscopy, flow cytometry, and structural biology, thereby accelerating discovery and technical training. Finally, Phase 3 emphasizes securing NCIBC’s sustainability by increasing core facility revenue, expanding its user base, recovering institutional overhead, and diversifying funding through federal grants, private partnerships, and state support. Achieving university-wide research center status strengthens NCIBC’s ability to attract top talent and funding, ensuring a stable platform for continued growth. Through these comprehensive efforts, NCIBC is poised to remain a leading hub for innovative biomedical research that deepens our understanding of disease biology and informs novel therapeutic strategies.
