Empowering Indigenous Health (EIH) - The Empowering Indigenous Health (EIH) program at the American Indian Health and Family Services (AIHFS) aims to establish an effective system that fosters equitable access to comprehensive healthcare and social services for the American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) community in Southeastern Michigan. Grounded in cultural competence and holistic care principles, the program incorporates innovative strategies to address barriers to accessing quality healthcare, particularly focusing on preventive and behavioral health services. Through a multi-faceted approach, the program implements culturally tailored services, integrates telehealth and technology, and incorporates traditional healing practices into mental and behavioral health services. Furthermore, the program emphasizes case management, care coordination, and community needs assessments to ensure personalized and comprehensive care for individuals. Targeted outreach efforts, tailored programming, and expanded transportation services aim to reach underserved populations and remote communities effectively. Collaborating with community organizations, tribal entities, and healthcare providers, the program establishes partnerships to address systemic barriers to care. Additionally, the program contributes to building a diverse and skilled public health workforce through internship programs, targeted recruitment strategies, and academic collaborations. By cultivating active partnerships with academia, the program ensures community-relevant learning experiences for learners while fostering knowledge exchange and enhancing cultural competence among healthcare professionals. Ultimately, AIHFS’ EIH program endeavors to achieve equitable access to healthcare services, improve health outcomes, and empower AI/AN communities to thrive in holistic well-being. Through its comprehensive and culturally sensitive approach, the program seeks to create sustainable models for healthcare delivery and contribute to the long-term health and resilience of the AI/AN population in Southeastern Michigan.
