Nurse Education, Practice, Quality and Retention - Workforce Expansion Program - The Pacific Nursing Workforce Education Program (PNWEP) aims to create an educational pipeline for disadvantaged students in the Central and Sacramento Valley regions, addressing higher attrition rates and lower representation among these students. Identified challenges include the need for navigation and orientation to university requirements, financial and academic support, social and mental health resources, mentorship, and enhanced experiential learning opportunities in acute and long-term care settings. The goal of the PNWEP proposal is to increase and strengthen the nursing workforce in acute and long-term care, with the priority of enhancing opportunities for students from populations that have historically experienced disparities and a lack of access to advanced nursing education. The University of the Pacific, School of Health Sciences offers a depth of resources and implements various tools and strategies to ensure ongoing faculty and staff training, outreach, collaborations, communication, and information sharing/dissemination with efforts to involve communities. The proposal seeks to: 1. Implement recruitment and retention systems 2. Increase enrollment 3. Implement training in acute and long-term care 4. Establish partnerships with acute and long-term sites 5. Provide student support, including stipends, mentoring, and wraparound services 6. Recruit and retain nursing faculty and clinical faculty/preceptors 7. Evaluate the program’s efficacy The PNWEP grant proposal aligns and synergizes with our School’s mission, vision, and values. The PNWEP program will support nursing students in various ways to ensure a robust pathway for diverse, talented students with deep roots in the community and the support needed to enter nursing careers successfully. Graduates prepared using these funds will be ready to meet the workforce needs of rural communities in acute care, long-term care, and public health settings.
