Momentary Affect Regulation - Safer Sex Intervention (MARSSI) was developed by the Project Director, Dr. Lydia Shrier of Boston Children’s Hospital, to reduce unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in adolescent/young adult women with depression. MARSSI consists of 1) a manualized session with a sexual and reproductive health counselor using motivational interviewing and teaching cognitive-behavioral skills; 2) a mobile health (mhealth) smartphone application (“app”) the young woman uses for four weeks to complete prompted reports 3x/day and a scheduled report 1x/day, and receive personalized messages supporting healthy behaviors and cognitive-behavioral skill use; 3) a booster session ¿ after 4 weeks of app use, she meets with the counselor to discuss her behaviors and learn a new skill. The setting is health centers of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, which is the largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the U.S., operating over 30 centers in California and Nevada. The target population is young women age 18-19 years old with depressive symptoms and sexual risk behavior. An independent evaluator, The Policy & Research Group, will implement a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of MARSSI vs. business-as-usual (N = 600). Participants will complete questionnaires at baseline, 6 weeks (post-program, mediators), 18 weeks (3 months post-program, behaviors), and 30 weeks (6 months post-program, behaviors). The study will contribute high-quality evidence about the efficacy of a counseling-plus-mhealth intervention for young women experiencing depression, a group with disproportionately high risk of adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes and currently underrepresented in teen pregnancy prevention programming.
