CBI will bring evidence-based TPP into New Mexico-based Navajo Nation communities in Western San Juan County, partnering with schools that serve a primarily Native American student population and have no funds available to offer formal TPP services. Funding for prevention is limited across the Navajo Nation, drastically reducing youth access to this critical resource. To enhance youth outcomes, CBI will work directly in the classrooms of six rural and isolated high schools that serve a Navajo student population. With funding, CBI will replicate the evidence-based Native STAND TPP Program. Native STAND is a comprehensive sexual health curriculum for Native high school students that focuses on sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, and teen pregnancy prevention while also covering drug and alcohol use, suicide, and dating violence. Native STAND is an inter-tribal curriculum for high school-aged teens (14-18 years old) that draws on cultural teachings and values from across Indian Country and Alaska. It is intended that learning other Native cultures, traditions, and perspectives will serve to strengthen a sense of pride, not only for one’s own tribe; but for all Native American tribes. The curriculum is flexible and can be easily adapted to include specific stories and traditions from the Navajo community. Native STAND will empower Navajo youth to take control of – and responsibility for – their relationships and choices. The program will start meaningful conversations that tangibly link decisions regarding sexual activities to short-term and long-term health, career, and happiness goals. Prevention Educators will lead youth through conversations that consider the individual hopes, plans, and goals of youth participants, as well as the potential impact a sexual relationship, unexpected pregnancy, or STI could have on each of those goals. Native STAND will prepare participants for their ever-increasing responsibility of decision-making. It wil l provide them with the medically accurate knowledge and skills necessary to pursue their immediate and long-range goals intentionally. Evaluation data shows that participation increases communication about sexual health topics, improvements in knowledge and self-efficacy, and substantial adoption of risk-reducing behaviors among teens. CBI’s Prevention Educators are experienced at implementing Native STAND and have been delivering this evidence-based programming across the Navajo Nation for the past decade. To support the levels of fidelity necessary to achieve published results, CBI’s Project Director conducts regular Fidelity Checks at each program site, monitoring Prevention Educators and providing support and professional development as needed to ensure all curricular components are delivered in direct alignment to intended processes.
