The Touro College Manhattan Physician Assistant Program SBIRT Curriculum Integration Project will educate physician assistant students, future primary care clinicians, to be prepared with the evidence based medical knowledge and tools necessary to identify substance abuse behaviors, facilitate positive behavioral changes, and provide appropriate referrals. Students are taught to function as traditionally- trained primary care providers who are able to provide evidence based medical care to patients in any number of specialties in hospital-based and private office settings. Over the course of three years approximately 175 students will receive SBIRT training. Students will receive training in all phases of the program-didactic and clinical, allowing them to build upon their knowledge and skills of SBIRT. There is also a subset of the student population that is participating in the newly developed Behavioral Health Track. The PA elective Behavioral Health track is for students interested in becoming trained in advanced psychiatric and behavioral health medicine. There is emphasis on the recognition and treatment for psychiatric disorders including behavioral interventions, patient interviews, and substance-related disorders. The program is currently affiliated with over 100 clinical sites. The training evaluation process will include monitoring stakeholder involvement, progress in training students, commitment to the SBIRT intervention, dissemination of curriculum, and sustainability. All SBIRT training participants will be evaluated at the completion of both the didactic and clinical training module as well post-graduation. The project goal is to maintain the integration of SBIRT beyond the length of the grant and to facilitate awareness in other non-physician assistant heath care practitioners.
