Advanced Nursing Education - Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners Program - This Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) Project, titled A Five-State Rural and Underserved Community Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) Workforce Collaborative, will enable Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Washington and Wyoming to recruit and train at least 180 additional SANEs (called SANE Fellows) over a three-year period. The need for an increased SANE workforce is strong in the targeted 151-county rural and underserved region. The program elements and new innovations in the proposed 2024-2027 Project builds on the Collaborative’s 2022-2024 SANE program experience and extensive feedback from partners and past/current SANE Fellows. In addition to the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence (SANE Applicant), the other four Collaborative members are: New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence, Washington Center for Nursing, Wyoming Center for Nursing and the Idaho State Police Forensic Services. Additional non-contracted partners are dozens of academic, community, public and clinical partners. Four Native American Tribes and organizations have also been recruited as partners. An explicit Objective “Building the Path to Sustainability” has been added to ensure that sustainability begins immediately following funding. Supported by at least 3.0 FTE staff and consultants across five states, the SANE program elements are: 1. Recruit 180 RNs, APRNs, and graduate nursing students; 2. Support the SANE Fellows through didactic training and through certificate completion; 3. Help SANE Fellows secure clinical experience, preceptors and jobs; 4. Provide financial support for SANE Fellows; 5. Track Fellows through didactic & clinical training, certificates/certification, and job placement; 6. Provide SANE Resilience and Retention course, including training on LGBTQ+ and Trauma Informed Care; 7. Provide 1:1 Mentoring by experienced SANEs; 8. Provide two-day genital skills training; 9. Create state specific SANE Resource Guides; 10. Support twice-monthly SANE case studies for all Fellows; and 11. Organize a five-state Technical Assistance Consultancy focused on reducing SANE systemic barriers. Given that over 30% of rape victims can be diverse, a diversity and LGBTQ+ “Bias Busters” course as well as training on Trauma Informed Care will be delivered to the SANE Fellows. The R&R program will be opened to existing SANE RNs. With a Project start date of 07/01/2024, the Center requests a funding preference based on serving multiple underserved and rural populations and regions. A five-state SANE Collaborative Steering Committee will support the implementation of this innovative project, working in partnership with dozens of academic, community and clinical partners. The SANE applicant is the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence, an experienced HRSA grantee. With over 200 academic, clinical and community partners in their existing networks, these Collaborative Partners are well equipped to meet the SANE project goals.
