The PSU/ANE-KS SANE project will use grant funds to develop a statewide infrastructure to increase the supply, distribution, and quality of Registered Nurses and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses trained and certified as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) in rural and underserved areas of Kansas (KS). Through training and consultation ser, the program will develop comprehensive SANE programs in hospitals, community health centers, and county health departments. The program will provide access to mental and physical care for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in KS. Currently, 78% of counties in KS DO NOT have SANE services available to their communities (82 of 105 counties). Since 2018, PSU successfully maintained academic-practice-community SANE partnerships for rural, underserved counties in KS. The continued implementation of PSU’s longitudinal immersive forensic training model will organize and facilitate training, logistics, policy development, and individual consultation to support the development of sustainable, multi-disciplinary SANE programs and Sexual Assault Response Teams (SART). There continue to be counties without SANE services and turnover of forensic nurses due to retirement and attrition. The program's primary goals are to recruit RNs and APRNs for SANE training, increase the number of trainings and locations in rural areas, expand access to SANE services, increase diversity of SANE workforce, and foster SANE practice and retention. Equitable access to SANE services throughout KS will provide trauma-informed care and timely evidence documentation to improve prosecution rates in rural, medically underserved communities. The PSU/ANE-KS SANE project will cultivate the expansion of rural academic-practice-community partnerships in collaboration with healthcare systems, qualified forensic nurses, victim support resources, law enforcement, and legal professionals. Objectives: 1. Increase SANE RNs & A PRNs through recruitment and forensic training in underserved areas of KS, with a goal of 45 trainees participating in new training/year (135 trainees/3-year grant). 2. Coordinate increased SANE didactic/clinical training in KS. 3. Establish collaborative partnerships with healthcare stakeholders for expanded access to SANE programs and diversity in the SANE workforce in rural and underserved areas of KS. 4. Support SANE training, practice, certification, resiliency, and retention. 5. Develop a Tele-SANE program for Kansas. 6. Expand SANE services in KS County Health Departments, goal 5/year (15/3-year grant). 7. Create first KS Certificate, MSN, and DNP with Emphasis in Forensic Nursing Leadership. Rural Statutory Funding Preference is requested as this project will substantially benefit vulnerable victims of rural and underserved populations and is based on a commitment to expanding the award in Medically Underserved Areas or Health Professional Shortage Areas and meeting a public health need in KS County Health Departments. Funding Amount Requested: $1,500,000.00
