Project Overview: Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) Center of Excellence in Forensic Nursing (CEFN) leads the state in forensic nursing education, outreach, and research. There continues to be a critical need to enhance the SANE workforce in Texas (TX) due to the large population, vast geographical area with many rural and underserved regions, and low numbers of certified SANEs relative to need. The purpose of the proposed project, TX Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners for the Rural and Under-Served Program III (TX SANEs R US III), is to continue to increase the number of nurses in TX who are trained and certified SANEs to meet the critical need for access to high-quality, trauma informed medical forensic care for patients who have been sexually assaulted. Project Goals: The goals of the TX SANEs R US Program III are to 1) Increase the number of trained and certified SANEs. We will recruit & retain 60 RNs & APRNs for CA-SANE, CP-SANE and/or SANE-A/SANE-P and/or GFN-C/AFN-C certification (Y1=20, Y2=20, Y3=20); 2). Increase the number of available SANE training courses. We will continue building upon existing TX SANE education courses being offered (adult SANE education, sexual assault simulation, and mock testimony) by adding the pediatric SANE course, well-child assessment simulation, strangulation simulation, and forensic photography to build competence an d confidence in skills necessary to provide care to patients experiencing sexual assault; A specially outfitted RV will deliver mobile simulation to rural areas; 3) Expand access to sexual assault forensic examinations, especially in rural and underserved areas. Established partnerships with existing SANE programs to provide locations and dedicated preceptors where project participants apply skills to live patients will continue. Expand the Community of Practice (CoP) using tele conferencing to provide support and mentorship for new SANE Participants and currently practicing forensic nurses through coaching, debriefing, continuing education (CE), peer review, technical assistance, and preparation for either state or national certification. New virtual reality experiences will be developed and implemented to enhance learning opportunities. We will continue using the established tracking system to monitor SANE student completion of courses and skill enhancement; and 4). Foster an environment that supports SANE training, practice, and retention. We will leverage the established technical assistance (TA) and continue "office hours" to provide a forum for TA and program development guidance. Project Specifics: All SANE didactic, clinical, and enhanced simulation education courses in the TX SANE R US III Program are derived from the most current evidence-based resources. We will leverage collaborative partnerships to recruit trainees, reduce time to complete SANE education and certification, and improve SANE retention through mentorship, continuing education, and the established Community of Practice (CoP). We will conduct ongoing program evaluation using Rapid Cycle Quality Improvement (RCQI) with Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) strategies to track recruitment, education, certification, retention, mentorship, technical assistance, and completion of program elements and make continuous program improvements. We are committed to sustaining the program beyond the funding period.
