Advanced Nurse Education-Sexual Nurse Assault Examiner program - Abstract Georgia College (GCSU) School of Nursing (SON), in collaboration with the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office, Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin, the Academy of Forensic Nursing, and Crisis Line & Safe House, the Department of Public Health, and Piedmont Macon Medical Center are committed to increasing the number of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN’s) who are trained and certified as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE’s) in the Middle Georgia area and beyond. As a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited School of Nursing that offers pre-licensure BSN, MSN (FNP, PMHNP, NE, WHNP, and CNM roles), DNP, and BSN to DNP degrees, we are uniquely situated to recruit qualified RN’s, coordinate didactic and clinical training, and monitor clinical practice hours and certification completion. Currently, GCSU is the only SANE training option in the state of GA that provides both didactic and clinical skills training in an educational environment with a group of core trainers who are well versed in best practice standards related to sexual assault nursing and education of health care professionals. Expanded partnerships with those listed above and continued funding would allow GCSU to continue with this training opportunity and expand services to include additional training options and continuing education. Based on previous performance and estimated growth from added programs, the GCSU ANE-SANE program estimates that with this funding, we can train, provide certification opportunities for, or otherwise educate over 450 Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners for predominately rural practice over the next three years, including over 120 newly trained, 33 newly certified SANE’s, refresher exams for 72 current SANEs, and continuing education opportunities for 225 SANE’s. Program Goals The GCSU ANE-SANE training program has three main goals: 1. Increase the supply and distribution of SANE’s by recruiting qualified RN’s and APRN’s from rural and medically underserved areas who are qualified to participate in Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training and sit for certification. 2. Expand access to training by enhancing partnerships with current agencies and establishing new partnerships to assist with implementation of a plan that would provide participants with various backgrounds and educational needs with didactic training, clinical skills practice opportunities, preceptorships, clinical monitoring, and performance evaluation. 3. Cultivate a community of practice that improves training and retention of SANE’s in the workforce, particularly in medically underserved and rural communities, by providing mentorship opportunities, continuing education, simulated refresher exams, and innovative training. Based on GCSU's geographical location, pursuant to Section 805 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. § 296d) and demonstrated in Attachment 7, we request rural and underserved funding preference for this application.
