The proposed new rural residency program will train residents for the independent practice of obstetrics in rural communities through family medicine rural residency program or RTP with enhanced obstetrical training.? Jacksboro, TX is located 100 miles northwest of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. It is the home of Faith Community Health System (FCHS) and the county seat of Jack County. Surrounding counties include Montague, Palo Pinto, Wise, and Young. Jack County has a population of 8,712 (1) with catchment area of greater than 10,000 population serviced by FCHS. Jacksboro suffers a significant healthcare shortage with a Primary Care HPSA score of 15 and Mental Health HPSA score of 16. These shortages are further exacerbated by surrounding obstetrics and surgical care deserts, sparse mental health and addictions services, and resource limitations typical of rural settings (2,3). For this primary-care and maternal-health focused family medicine residency, UTSW will provide institutional sponsorship. The PGY-1 training will occur at the UTSW academic hospitals in Dallas. The PGY-2 and PGY-3 training will occur in rural Jacksboro, TX.? In terms of planning and development, measurable objectives and outcomes include (1) Further developing the partnership between UTSW and FCHS.?(2) Accreditation for Type 1 ACGME RTP Designation. (3) Sustainably planning a residency with financial stability. (4) Development of tracking tools and infrastructure to support the operations of the residency. (5) Training of support staff in the day-to-day operations of the residency. (6) Development of a qualified program director (7) Training the highly qualified practicing physicians at FCHS to thrive as teachers.
