As an IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), CMC operates two dental facilities in West Central Alabama and Jefferson County, including a Birmingham location in Ensley, designated as a Healthcare Provider Shortage Area (HPSA) with a Dental HPSA of 13 by HRSA. The proposed project aims to bolster infrastructure by: Updating and expanding two operatories at the Birmingham Dental location in Ensley to better serve people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Introducing mobile dental services at local high schools, community events, and other clinics to extend accessibility. Given the financial strain and other social determinants of health factors that PLWHA often faces due to the lack of dental access and rising costs in Alabama, updating and expanding dental infrastructure is crucial to mitigate barriers to care. By addressing oral health issues, CMC aims to improve healthcare outcomes and reduce health disparities among PLWHA. CMC collaborates with regional HIV/AIDS service organizations such as the 1917 Clinic and UAB Family Clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and AIDS Alabama to provide comprehensive care and support services. This partnership ensures a coordinated approach to enhance the well-being of PLWHA, promoting healthy and independent lives within the community. Via this one year of grant funding, CMC will increase the number of completed dental referrals for PLWHA at its Birmingham dental location, coordinate and conduct 4 mobile dental clinics as another avenue to enhance access to preventive dental care, and ensure high-quality dental care through regular audits of dental charts.
