Support for and collaboration amongst Research Integrity Officers, Research Administration, and compliance committees such as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a necessity. Compliance practices ensure research can be conducted safely, responsibly, ethically and securely – while helping to identify and communicate compliance, research conduct and security concerns.
The North Carolina Association for Biomedical Research (NCABR), a 501(c)(3) science education nonprofit organization that provides support for and promotes public understanding of bioscience research, collaborates with the Massachusetts Society for Medical Research (MSMR), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Maine Regulatory Training and Ethics Center (MeRTEC) to host The Three I’s (IACUC, IBC, IRB): Biosecurity & Research Integrity™ conferences. The Three I’s conference explores current trends in research compliance, research integrity and updates in regulations. It also introduces the value, importance, and interconnection of research committees, Research Integrity Officers, and Research Administration. Past conference sessions addressed topics of biosecurity, conflict of interest, export control, data management, mentoring, authorship, peer review, foreign influence and collaborative research.
We propose, based on the previous Three I’s conferences and building upon their successes, to host the 27th annual three-day Three I’s conference in North Carolina in late April 2025. This conference will engage research committee members, research faculty, research administrators and attorneys from academic institutions, government, and industry in relevant topics, challenging issues and current trends in research integrity, research compliance and biosecurity. Through collaborative efforts from combined skills and knowledge represented in NCABR, MSMR, MeRTEC, the FBI and the Office of Research Integrity, conference attendees will benefit from engaging in discussions, reviewing case studies and listening to keynote speakers that will increase their awareness and understanding of the vital ethical issues facing the life science community. NCABR is committed to delivering an outstanding educational and training opportunity, as well as providing an interactive, interdisciplinary learning and networking platform that has been the signature approach of this conference for more than 26 years.
