PURPOSE
The proposed project for Component 3: School-Based Surveillance for the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (Department) is to continue to strengthen systematic procedures to collect, analyze, and report on adolescent health behaviors and protective factors using the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and on school health policies and practices using School Health Profiles Survey (Profiles) data.
OUTCOMES
The overall project outcome is to improve understanding of short-term trends in youth risk behaviors and experiences and school health policies and practices. The outcomes for the YRBS administered in 2025, 2027, and 2029 are to have statewide weighted data and county data from four counties for the middle and high schools. The outcomes for the Profiles administered in 2026 and 2028 are to have statewide weighted data and sub-site data (Department schools, public charter schools, schools with Hawaiian Language Immersion Programs (HLIP), and schools without HLIPs) from the secondary school principals and lead health education teachers. The Department has conducted the YRBS every two years in the odd-numbered calendar years since 1991 and conducted the Profiles every two years in the even-numbered calendar years since 2000. With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s financial and technical support, the Department has obtained weighted data for the YRBS since 2005 and the Profiles since 2006. Should this project proposal be funded, Hawaiʻi will continue to have weighted data for the next five years to assess and improve school-based health education and support health-related programs that connect students to health services and contribute to safe and supportive environments for youth across the state.
