Ending the HIV epidemic has been a dream of those impacted by HIV/AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic. That vision can be reality with the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative. By recognizing the global call to action, and responding to it, Alabama can energize communities, mobilize resources, and confront challenges that perpetuate a system that is not working equitable for everybody. Alabama is one of 57 county and state jurisdictions to be identified as carrying the burden of HIV rates in the United States. Because Alabama has a mostly rural state, increased focus will be given to the five highest burden (13.8 rate) counties (Houston, Jefferson, Mobile, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa)and fourteen emerging (10.8 rate) counties (Bullock, Calhoun, Dallas, Franklin, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Madison, Marion, Morgan, Russell, Talladega, Walker, and Winston) for new HIV infections under the EHE initiative. The EHE Program will continue to partner with AIDS Service Organizations, public or private non-profit organizations, government agencies, non-government public or private organizations, faith-based organizations, colleges and universities, and others across the state to implement strategies that will effectively address the four pillars which are diagnose, treat, prevent, and respond. The EHE Program will provide opportunities to implement comprehensive HIV programs that complement programs, designed to support ending the HIV epidemic in America by leveraging powerful data, tools and resources to reduce new HIV infections by 75 percent in five years. EHE interventions targeting at-risk groups e.g. men who have sex with men; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community; persons of color; adolescents; young adults; and people who inject drugs will bring opportunities to address the synergistic HIV and the hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemics. In Alabama, this approach will leverage community field work that is already in place for HIV and HCV care, help to mitigate absence of syringe service programs, prohibited by law, and significant gaps in access to addiction treatment. Because of shared modes of transmission, efforts to eliminate HIV curb new HCV infections and vice-versa.
