PS20-2004 PTC Abstract In response to the funding opportunity entitled “National Network of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Clinical Prevention Training Centers (NNPTC) (CDC-RFA-PS20-2004),” the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in collaboration with Wake Forest University Health Sciences, under the current designation of the Alabama/North Carolina Prevention Training Center (AL/NC PTC), proposes to assess training needs and service gaps, and to develop and deliver STD clinical prevention training and technical assistance (T/TA) to the Southeastern U.S. (Core Component). The AL/NC PTC further proposes to support providers and clinical settings to integrate HIV preventive services in STD specialty clinics (Subcomponent) and to develop future STD leaders through participation in the STD fellow training program (Subcomponent). Rates of STDs continue to rise in the United States; the Southeast remains disproportionately affected by STDs; and HIV incidence remains highest in the Southeast. These inter-dependent epidemics bespeak the need for prioritization of STD and HIV interventions in the Southeastern U.S. The AL/NC PTC will develop and disseminate multi-modal STD and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) training and T/TA based on the CDC STD treatment guidelines and emerging clinical science with evidence-based approaches that meet regionally identified needs. Diverse, practical trainings, grounded in adult learning theory to optimize retention and allow for swift implementation, will improve the capacity of providers, clinical sites, and healthcare systems to diagnoses, manage, treat and counsel individuals with and at-risk for STDs and at risk for HIV in the Southeast. With a new leadership team and an expanded expert faculty, the PTC will build on its well-established infrastructure and training resources by incorporating new and innovative programming based on regionally prioritized needs including an independent learning tool (Kaizen-Education), scalable learning resources including distance learning and a Training of Trainers program, and learning communities—efforts that will expand reach and better support STD and HIV prevention in the region. The PTC has identified specific, measurable outcomes: 1) Improved access to and reach of T/TA for priority providers in the Southeastern U.S.; 2) Increased partnerships between STD PTCs and stakeholders; 3) Increased learning communities; 4) Increased provider knowledge and skill to provide STD clinical preventive services to persons at risk for STDs in the region; 5) Increased participation in the STD Clinical Consultation Network (CCN) by expanding awareness of the resource in the Southeastern U.S.; 6) Increased provider use of externally facing NNPTC newsletters by increasing awareness among STD providers in the region and by contributing content to the newsletter; 7) Improved ability of STD specialty clinics to identify those who could benefit from PrEP/non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP); 8) Increased PrEP/nPEP-eligible individuals in STD specialty clinics who are offered HIV PrEP/nPEP; 9) Increased identification of new HIV infections in STD specialty clinics; 10) Increased identification of virally unsuppressed people in STD specialty clinics; and 11) Increased STD fellows in the board-certified Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at UAB and increased presentations at national and regional meetings by fellows. Seated within the Deep South, the AL/NC PTC is well-positioned to achieve the mission of the funding opportunity and improve sexual health care by reducing STDs and HIV through prioritized T/TA to healthcare providers in the Southeast.
