Public health saves lives, public health saves money! Every $1 spent on prevention saves $5.60 in health spending. (“Prevention for a Healthier America” 2009). Nevada’s AI/AN population face many health disparities related to risk behaviors, poor health status and living conditions, and limited healthcare access. The Wašiw Nation (a federally-recognized tribe) expects the Good Health and Wellness in Indian County (GHWIC) grant funding to allow us to increased physical activity with an emphasis on walking, reduced incidence of type 2 diabetes, and reduced prevalence of high blood pressure. The Wašiw Nation’s purpose for applying under component 1 is to target strategy 1(Implement evidenced-informed and culturally-adapted policy, system, and environmental changes (PSE) to prevent obesity), strategy 3 (implement evidence-informed and culturally-adapted community – clinical linkages to support type 2 diabetes prevention), and strategy 4 (implement evidence-informed and culturally-adapted community – clinical linkages to support heart disease and stroke prevention). All three strategies will be targeting the same population of adult community members (18 to 85) residing on or near the four tribal communities within the Wašiw Nation.
