There is a compelling body of evidence that higher rates of tobacco use and other health disparities experienced by the LGBTQ communities lead to higher rates of cancer. Too often the largest tobacco and cancer public health agencies in the country have insufficient expertise in serving LGBTQ individuals to ensure they are promulgating the best possible practices. Building a network that can act as a conduit between community experts and these key public health leaders allows lessons and strategies to be crosswalked and implemented in a way that will reduce the tobacco-related cancer disparities experienced by the LGBTQ population. The National LGBT Cancer Network is proposing Networking2Save: LGBTQ to reduce late stage tobacco-related cancer disease for LGBTQ individuals by integrating community-tailored activities into the current tobacco and cancer public health arenas. This will be accomplished via the following steps: 1) assembling a network comprising both tobacco and cancer organizations that are interested in expanding their LGBTQ engagement and LGBTQ organizations that are interested in sharing lessons about the population and expanding their health work, 2) conducting regular needs assessments to prioritize activity topics, 3) combining the expertise of all the network members to either find or build resources that address highest priority needs, and 4) prioritizing sustainable knowledge transfer by disseminating this information online and making it available as a permanent resource for all to access. The planned outcomes in all of the main strategy areas are as follows: Strategy Area: Network Administration & Management. Outcome: Strengthen relationship between cancer/tobacco organizations and LGBTQ organizations. Strategy Area: Training & Technical Assistance. Outcome: Increase capacity of CDC-funded tobacco and cancer control programs in improving the collection and use of target population data. Strategy Area: National, state, tribal, and territorial interventions. Outcome: Increase delivery of evidence-based interventions to reach and impact target populations. Strategy Area: Mass reach communications. Outcome: Increase quit attempts and cancer screenings amongst the population. Networking2Save: LGBTQ will accomplish these goals through a formula of tested high-impact activities: convening one membership networking event per month, creating and disseminating one knowledge piece per month, creating and hosting one training event per month, and providing in-depth technical assistance to two CDC grantees or national partners per quarter. The network builds on a basis of decades of LGBTQ cancer and tobacco staff expertise, adds a robust collaboration history, layers on tested best strategies for maximizing the impact of the disparity network, and finishes with a new high bar of commitment to sustainable knowledge documentation and transfer. Information gathered and built over the course of this project will be freely available to all online during and after the award.
