Cancer control requires broad public health intervention across the cancer continuum with a focus on health equity and sustainable, scalable programs at the state, tribal, territorial and local levels. The George Washington University Cancer Center (GWCC) aims to continue providing technical assistance and training (TAT) to enhance the capacity of CDC-funded comprehensive cancer control (CCC) programs to deliver evidence-based cancer control strategies. TAT is critical in preparing programs and coalitions to prioritize policy, systems and environmental (PSE) approaches across the cancer continuum. Other gaps in workforce capacity include communicating research to policymakers, evaluation designs, knowledge transfer, and adapting evidence-based interventions (EBIs). TAT for staff and leadership development is also critical to improve implementation of EBIs. GWCC will leverage its existing infrastructure, capacity and relationships to provide TAT to CCC programs and their partners to reduce the burden of cancer across the continuum. TAT will result in increased knowledge and capacity of NCCCP grantees to use EBIs for prevention and early detection of cancer, survivorship support, and PSE change to address cancer health inequities. GWCC's approach, informed by a theoretical framework, stakeholder needs assessment, and consultation with national partners, will lead to development and implementation of timely, efficient and impactful TAT. These activities will result in the following outcomes: reduced duplication of TAT effort and improved use of resources; enhanced reach to diverse CCC stakeholders; delivery of collaborative, high-quality TAT; promotion of CCC successes; and increased implementation of EBIs and PSE strategies by CCC programs—ultimately increasing health-seeking behaviors and improving cancer outcomes. Below are examples of major proposed activities: • Maintain effective communication and dissemination channels to disseminate TAT to CCC programs and coalitions; Maintain and disseminate 7 online trainings and 9 social media toolkits focused on prevention, access to care, evidence-based communication, and PSE change topics • Increase knowledge and capacity among trainees to implement cancer survivorship EBIs through 11 existing online trainings • Increase knowledge and capacity among trainees to use evidence-based interventions to improve healthy lifestyle behaviors and increase availability of wellness programs for cancer survivors through community roundtables in partnership with YMCA of the USA • Increase knowledge and capacity among trainees to implement cancer screening EBIs through a 12-month mentorship program • Host webinars on tailoring tobacco cessation and screening considerations for sexual and gender minority populations, and on improving quality of cancer survivorship care in partnership with LGBT HealthLink and the Commission on Cancer • Increase use of PSE change planning models and increase knowledge and capacity to address cancer-related health disparities through Action4PSEChange.org-related TA and 2 live workshops with follow-up TA on action plan implementation for health disparities projects in the tribal and Pacific Island Jurisdictions and in partnership with State Offices of Rural Health and the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) Partnerships will extend our reach to support sustainable cancer control partnerships across the nation.
