King County Sodium Reduction PartnershipKing County, Washington offers a unique opportunity for advancing sustainable sodium reduction efforts to prevent chronic disease and reduce health inequities. Public Health ? Seattle & King County and the University of Washington?s Center for Public Health Nutrition and our partners are submitting this proposal for the King County Sodium Reduction Partnership. We will to work with partners including high-need school districts, the emergency food system, major food suppliers and distributors, and key technical assistance providers and experts in this field. King County is a large, diverse, and complex environment with 2 million residents, 39 cities, 19 school districts, 21 hospitals, and over 90 food banks and meal programs. Although King County ranks among the most affluent counties by income in the US, it also has some of the poorest people in the country. County-wide metrics mask health inequities in low SES and racially/ethnically diverse geographic areas and individual communities. Hypertension is a primary risk factor for heart disease and stroke, the second and fifth leading causes of death in King County. Sodium reduction can have a significant impact on reducing health disparities and cardiovascular disease events. Reducing sodium in the food supply is the best population-based strategy to reduce the prevalence of hypertension. King County will address the barriers and challenges our communities face in healthy eating by implementing lasting and sustainable sodium reduction efforts in the food and meals provided in two venues: high-need school districts and the emergency food system. Outcomes: We aim to achieve the following outcomes for our two selected venues:Venue Short-term Outcomes Intermediate Long-termHigh-Need School Districts Increase:? integration of procurement practices to reduce sodium content? implementation of school meal preparation practices to reduce sodium content ? implemen tation of behavioral economics approaches Increase:? availability of lower- sodium foods ? student selection of lower-sodium foods Reduce:? sodium intake among students to within the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommended maximumEmergency Food System Increase:? implementation of nutrition standards that include sodium? integration of low-sodium procurement practices for purchased/ donated foods? implementation of behavioral economics approaches Increase:? availability of lower-sodium food products? selection of lower-sodium food products Reduce:? sodium intake to within the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommended maximum
