New Jersey has taken significant steps towards establishing a comprehensive Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) tracking and surveillance system. The current EHDI Information System (EHDI-IS) merges initial hearing screening data and information on risk indicators from New Jersey’s electronic birth certificate system, known as the Vital Information Platform (VIP) and outpatient follow-up report data recorded in the New Jersey Immunization Information System (NJIIS), the state's immunization registry. EHDI-IS data are matched to Early Intervention program data to allow for tracking of children through all three steps of the EHDI process (screening, diagnosis, and early intervention). The proposed project will build on past successes and improve the ability of the program to track children through the EHDI process using data from multiple sources. The goals of this project are to maintain and continue to improve the EHDI-IS using four strategies: enhance EHDI-IS through system optimization; engage stakeholders in the tracking and reporting processes and provide technical assistance during the reporting process; maintain quality of the data and lead strategic actions for continuous program improvement through data analysis and evaluation; and develop data reports and disseminate information among internal and external stakeholders. The EHDI program will collaborate with Office of Vital Statistics and Registration (OVSR) and NJIIS staff to ensure that planned updates to those data systems that provide core EHDI-IS data continue to support EHDI program needs. Ongoing training of data reporters using those systems will continue throughout the project period. The EHDI program will collaborate with data reporters on strategies to improve data timeliness and quality. The EHDI-IS will also be utilized for targeted reporting including hospital-specific data reports, audiology facility data reports and reports for Regional Early Intervention Collaboratives. The EHDI-IS will also be used to identify data quality issues, such as duplicate records and data outliers.
