The project, Improving Timely Documentation, Reporting, and Analysis of Diagnostic and Intervention Data through Optimization of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Surveillance Practices and Information System, of the Alabama EHDI Program, administered through the Alabama Department of Public Health, addresses the optimization of the existing EHDI information system to enhance the ability to collect, report, analyze, and use patient-level data. The Alabama EHDI Program establishes a protocol to ensure that all deaf or hard of hearing infants are identified early and receive intervention services in a timely manner per the EHDI 1-3-6 plan, which recommends newborn hearing screening no later than 1 month of age, diagnostic audiologic testing no later than 3 months of age for infants who do not pass the inpatient hearing screening, and enrollment in early intervention no later than 6 months of age for those identified with hearing loss. The program plans to improve the capacity to document the provision of timely follow-up diagnostic testing and early intervention services in order to help address potential developmental delays.
