Project Abstract The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) is pleased to submit its funding application for CDC-RFA-CK20-2003. NHMA’s project, Mejor Salud (MS) will be a 5 year collaboration with and supports the CDC’s goals of Improving Clinical and Public Health Outcomes to Prevent and Control COVID-19 and Re-Emerging Infectious Disease Threats. NHMA will establish a contractual collaboration with the Institute for Health Promotion Research at University of Texas Health San Antonio for communications activities and with The New York Academy of Medicine for evaluation. Purpose. Mejor Salud will work with CDC to decrease COVID-19 cases in the Latino community by building healthcare provider capacity and increasing public awareness and understanding of guidance, clinical guidelines, and best practices for the prevention and control of COVID-19 and reemerging infectious diseases. Outcomes Strategy 1 Administer and Coordinate: Recruit and assemble an Advisory Committee to guide the project activities planning, implementation and assessment. Convene biweekly staff meetings and monthly meetings with partners and others. Develop a tracking system for data collection from all activities so that NHMA can submit to CDC portal. Develop website, portal and communications to promote for training physicians about public health and education the public. Short-term Outcomes: Identify 10-12 physicians and public health leaders to serve on the Advisory Committee for quarterly meetings. Plan and implement activities of the project. Intermediate Outcomes: Collect data from participants on activities, including lessons learned on best practices, guidelines of CDC for COVID-19 and new adjusted training tools for physicians and providers who care for Latinos and collect and review assessments of activities. Evaluate activities, provide CDC with data on a monthly basis. Set-up schedules for meetings, data collection and evaluation activities. Long-term Outcomes: evaluation and reporting activites. Strategy 2 Target and Train: Engage frontline physicians and train them as Fellows with 3 public health agencies (Los Angeles County, CA, NYC, NY, Cameron County, TX) over 9 months per year and lead training in CDC best practices for the broader workforce through monthly webinars supporting the prevention and control of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Short-term Outcomes: New guidance is informed by target frontline prevention and control personnel Intermediate Outcomes: Expanded participation and reach of broader health workforce among Latino populations in environments that increase risk for infectious diseases Long-term Outcomes: Improved clinical outcomes among patients with or who are at increased risk for emerging infectious diseases Strategy 3 Disseminate and Adopt: Support CDC in the dissemination and adoption or implementation of guidance, clinical guidelines, and best practice for the prevention and control of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Communication activities will include social media, podcasts, videos, list serves, twitter chats, websites, portal and health equity report cards. Short-term Outcomes: Increased distribution of existing guidance for the prevention and control of emerging and re-emerging diseases to the continually expanding target audience of Latinos and health care workforce who care for Latinos. Intermediate Outcomes: Increased number of Latinos and HCP who understand the best practices for the prevention and control of infectious diseases. Long-term Outcomes: Decrease the transmission of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
