UMass Amherst supports CDC's FluSight hub by developing forecasting infrastructure, generating influenza forecasts, and improving communication of results to public health officials and the public. - The UMass-Amherst Influenza Forecasting Center Acute respiratory viral pathogens cause significant morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Influenza viruses are among the most serious of these. They can cause severe illness, such as pneumonia, and can be fatal. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that influenza infections lead to 120,000-710,000 hospitalizations and 6,300-52,000 deaths each year in the US. Improving real-time forecasting for infectious diseases enables more targeted, timely interventions and risk communication, both of which have a measurable impact on disease spread in epidemic and pandemic scenarios. This project will support the FluSight real-time influenza forecasting efforts led by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Specifically, we will: ● develop and maintain infrastructure that supports ongoing real-time forecasting efforts; ● collaborate directly with CDC and other network partners on seasonal influenza forecasting efforts; ● update FluSight guidance documents describing the forecasting challenges prior to each respiratory season, in collaboration with CDC; ● update validation protocols to ensure high quality model submissions to FluSight, in collaboration with CDC; ● publish interim and final reports (including scientific posters, presentations and papers) evaluating the performance of models that submit forecasts to the FluSight modeling hub; ● generate and submit individual and ensemble forecasts to the FluSight hub in real-time; ● develop and evaluate new model evaluation metrics tailored to public health decision-making settings; and, ● pilot new model evaluation and visualization strategies and evaluate their effectiveness with different audiences (e.g., modelers, state and federal public health officials). This project is led by Dr. Nicholas Reich, PI of the Reich Lab, based in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences.
