Wisconsin's NVDRS Application - Base and Supplement - Wisconsin's National Violent Death Reporting Systems (NVDRS) CDC-RFA-CE22-2201 Notice of Funding Opportunity Project Abstract Summary The purpose of this project is to maintain and improve the implementation of the National Violent Death Reporting System in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Violent Death Reporting System (WI-VDRS) is an ongoing statewide, comprehensive, active injury surveillance system that links data across multiple sources to provide public health surveillance on violence related injuries. It generates information on all violent deaths that is detailed, useful, and timely at the local, state, and national levels. These data are and will be used to assess the extent of violent deaths in Wisconsin, to identify the relative contribution of different risk factors, and to inform prevention program and public policy development, implementation and evaluation. Since 2015, Wisconsin has experienced an annual average of over 1,100 violent deaths, with more than three-quarters of these deaths classified as suicides. The WI-VDRS program supports data collection on all violent deaths across the state. Data is analyzed and findings are broadly disseminated through existing and expanded channels. Case-level data, without personal identifiers, will contribute to the national VDRS maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The WI-VDRS program, in the Behavioral Health Section of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, has, in collaboration with the Division of Public Health’s Office of Health Informatics (OHI), established its ability to conduct surveillance of deaths due to violence since the inception of national violent death surveillance in the early 2000’s. This application outlines WI-VDRS’ plans to continue the collection, analyses, and dissemination of violent death data according to CDC’s guidelines, and documents our ability to do so through our length of experience, planning, and formal collaboration across multiple partners. The WI-VDRS program is a statewide program and is estimated to serve a population of more than 5.8 million people, as of 2020.
