Navajo Youth Builders Coalition (NYBC) is a non-incorporated grass-roots community action authority that was founded in 2009 by local nonprofit, Capacity Builders, Inc. (CBI). NYBC campaigns to support Navajo families and youth living in rural Ft. Defiance Agency. Ongoing outreach, education, training, and prevention efforts focused on youth and families are working. NYBC’s mission is “To eradicate the poison that comes in the form of alcohol and illegal drugs and the risk factors leading to substance misuse among Navajo youth.” NYBC members donate an average of 1,200 hours to further the initiative annually, volunteering as prevention educations in the school-based prevention program operated by NYBC and serving 93 local high school students daily. They perform annual environmental scans, update the annual Provider Directory listing all local youth and family service providers in the alcohol and drug prevention, intervention, and treatment arena. They make presentations to the Tribe and regional funders promoting the need for youth services to prevent drug and alcohol misuse. They arrange for summaries of drug and alcohol findings to be developed into flyers and posters, disseminated community-wide to educate residents on true problems impacting local youth. Our deep community roots, expertise in culturally effective outreach and engagement strategies, intimate knowledge of the specific challenges as well as the latent opportunities in America’s largest Tribal Lands, has dramatically improved the quality of life for countless young people and their families – a sustainable, systems-based prevention strategy that must now shift focus to encompass prescription drugs and methamphetamine. With funding, NYBC will enhance efforts, bringing new light to the growing crisis of prescription drug misuse and methamphetamine that continue to infiltrate Native Lands and poison Navajo youth. NYBC will increase community collaboration and reduce youth substance abuse. Local health agencies participate in NYBC, and their continued support will enhance coordination, maximizing the impact of outreach and education through targeted collaboration.
