Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) Program - North Carolina State University (NC State) School of Social Work (SSW) is requesting support for the Trauma-Responsive Youth Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (TRY-BHWET) program to increase the supply of a diverse behavioral health workforce trained to provide integrated behavioral health care and committed to working in high-need and high-demand areas. Since our first HRSA-funded BHWET program in 2014, the NC State SSW has successfully recruited and trained 275 trainees. At least 62.9% of former trainees are working in medically underserved areas. The TRY-BHWET project builds upon the strong infrastructure, training, and partnerships we developed through past projects, and has a specific emphasis on preparing social workers to meet the needs of youth up to age 25 at risk for or experiencing mental health, trauma, and behavioral health disorders. The TRY-BHWET objectives are to: 1) Increase the number of new or expanded community partnerships with experiential training sites in high-need and high-demand areas; 2) Promote collaborative training by using team-based models of care to integrate behavioral health care into interprofessional primary care settings; 3) Recruit a diverse workforce interested in working with children, adolescents, and young adults in high demand high need areas; 4) Recruit, develop, and expand capacity to train clinical supervisors to support and mentor behavioral health trainees; and 5) Engage in continuous quality improvement efforts, complete all grant reporting requirements, collaborate with BHWET grantees and stakeholders, and disseminate findings. Specifically, funding will enable grant personnel to recruit 51 diverse Master of Social Work (MSW) students and provide them with stipend support and evidence-based didactic and experiential interprofessional training. The TRY-BHWET program will recruit 40 new training sites in high need areas and strengthen partnerships with 60 training sites through enhanced support, training, and technical assistance. To increase the capacity of supervisors to mentor trainees, we will provide evidence-based training and support to 250 clinical supervisors. Furthermore, program participants will receive interprofessional collaborative training that utilizes team-based models of care and emphasizes evidence-based interventions, behavioral health integration, interprofessional practice, cultural and linguistic competencies, and trauma-responsive approaches. The TRY-BHWET program is necessary to address the growing and unmet needs of youth in the state. Out of 100 counties in North Carolina (NC), 93 include mental health shortage areas, and the state only meets about 15% of its need for providers. NC youth are experiencing increased rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems, and increased exposure to violence and environmental stressors. Suicide is a substantial problem and became the leading cause of death among NC youth ages 10-14 in 2019. Without access to qualified providers, youth often end up in emergency rooms and jails across the state leading to substandard care and the worsening of behavioral health conditions. However, funding from this proposal will address the shortage of providers and gaps in care by preparing diverse MSW trainees who are committed to working in medically underserved areas to provide evidence-based behavioral health services. The TRY-BHWET program will increase the quality of behavioral health services by strengthening collaborative work and partnerships, through increasing clinical supervisory capacity, and by providing interprofessional collaborative training to trainees, faculty, and site staff. A well-prepared workforce of clinical social workers can improve the integration of behavioral health care into primary care settings, increase access to care, and ultimately improve population health among NC youth.
