The awardee, Washington University and Barnes Jewish Hospital, supports this three year U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) project in consultation with the Secretary of the Defense (SECDEF). The goal of this project is to embed military trauma care providers (MTCPs) into our institution as a team to appropriately maintain and sustain a ready medical force that is continually prepared to deploy in support of contingency operations worldwide. The objectives are: 1)Facilitate attainment of full credentials and privileges for MTCPs 2) Provide MTCPs with a comprehensive hospital/ institutional orientation 3) Evaluate MTCPs’ individualized baseline trauma/critical care skills and competencies per their scope of practice 4) Fully embed MTCPs/MTCP teams into our trauma center, including incorporation into operational exercises and training drills related to public health emergencies 5) Train embedded MTCPs to be competent in critical care and trauma skills via simulation and clinical rotations 6) Implementation of MTCP call team 7) Re-train MTCPs when knowledge/performance deficiencies are identified 8) Ensure sustainment of embedded MTCPs’ critical care and trauma skills through providing direct access to trauma/ emergency general surgery patients in all locations 9) Provide MTCPs opportunities to work with subspecialists in other fields 10) Provide embedded MTCPs opportunities to participate in non-trauma care. The expected outcomes are: 1) successful embedment of MTCPs into our center 2) successful skill development 3) successful skills sustainment and medical readiness. The products from this project are: 1) quarterly and annual report on MTCP performance measures 2) quarterly and annual report on MTCP workload.
