The Mt. Sanford Tribal Consortium (MSTC) aims to empower its people and uphold traditional
values to secure a healthier future for the community's children. High rates of drug abuse and
suicide have long afflicted rural Alaska, and the pandemic has worsened these issues by
increasing opioid and fentanyl use. MSTC's Project Director, Outreach Specialist, and
Contractors will collect data for an outreach program guided by an Elders Advisory Group,
which will support youth healing. The program seeks to build resilience among youth by
fostering a connection to their cultural heritage and elders' wisdom through activities like fish
camp and other cultural practices.
Given the influence of social media on young people, the program will record cultural activities
and share them on popular platforms, featuring messages on the consequences of stigma and
substance misuse. MSTC's partnership with Frostline Studios will yield two recordings per year,
resulting in ten videos over five years. Program staff will receive training from Dr. Cathy King
on reducing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) and promoting Social Determinants of
Health (SDOH). Dr. King will also provide support for individuals affected by Substance Use
Disorders (SUDs), including screening, case management, referrals, and psychosocial support.
The initiative focuses on prevention and harm reduction, raising awareness about substance
abuse's harmful effects, and promoting healthier lifestyle choices.
