Tioga Advocacy, Support, And Prevention (ASAP) Coalition recognizes that underage drinking continues to be a national and local public health concern. Tioga ASAP will address underage drinking in Tioga County by using a multi-pronged approach, informed by quantitative and qualitative data and the strategic prevention framework process. The goals are to delay initiation of use, decrease reported alcohol use by those under 21, shift social norms, and create preventative policies and practice standards around underage drinking throughout Tioga County. The coalition will addressing behavioral health disparities in LGBT youth as they are more than
twice as likely as non-LGBT youth to experiment with alcohol and drugs. The target population is youth 12-20 in Tioga County the will use youth led prevention messages, increased law enforcement presence and compliance checks, environmental strategies and policy changes, and social norming campaigns to reduce the following indicators. The data to be collected for the program will measure the following: 1) Past 30-day alcohol use; 2) Perception of Risk or Harm (alcohol use); 3) Perception of Parental Disapproval of (alcohol use); and 4) Perception of Peer Disapproval of (alcohol use) for Tioga County Youth in Grades 6-12. The current data clearly shows a need for the coalition to address underage alcohol use. Overall, TC has 39.9% of students reporting lifetime alcohol use and 19% reporting past 30-day use, a total of 10.2% of students reported binge drinking.
