The South Tucson Operation Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment (STOPit) Coalition serves the City of South Tucson, a one square mile area located in southern Arizona. South Tucson is a city that experiences many risk factors including high rates of poverty and low value rental housing units and has very few resources available to support its residents. South Tucson has a long history of substance use and its effects are publicly visible. At the same time, South Tucson is a community rich in cultural pride and longtime family ties and its residents are continuously expressing a commitment to support their youth by building a stronger community free of drugs and their influence. The STOPit Coalition, begun as a grassroots level operation in 2016, brings together the 12 sectors of the community to work in and with the community to build the capacity needed to develop and implement multiple strategies to both mitigate the identified risk factors and build on existing protective factors to prevent underage drinking and drug use among youth ages 12 - 17 in South Tucson.
