The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), located in Lincoln, NE, serves as both the land-grant and the comprehensive public University for the State of Nebraska. This project impacts all UNL students and campus community members. The University of Nebraska Public Policy Center and UNL’s Office of “Big Red Resilience and Well-Being” are partnering with other campus and community groups to promote suicide prevention and behavioral health well-being in this project. The overall aim of the project is to address infrastructure gaps in policies and programs to guide 1) engaging and connecting incoming students with a mental health or substance use history to campus resources, 2) sustainable programming to encourage help-seeking while de-stigmatizing mental health and substance misuse problems on campus, 3) screening students for mental health and substance misuse concerns, 4) reducing access to lethal means of suicide, and 5) adopting policies and procedures for suicide postvention. The project goals and objectives lead to screening at least 75% of incoming students and 2500 existing students each year for mental health and substance use concerns; battling stigma associated with behavioral health by engaging 600-900 students each year in outreach and educational events; integrating the new national 988 crisis system with the campus; and convening an advisory group to guide integration of well-being and suicide prevention in policies and the campus milieu.
