PROJECT ABSTRACT – CMHC Crisis Response Project
Purpose: To create a trauma-informed approach utilizing best-practices for all patients in Labette County, KS. Conducted by: establishing a Mobile Crisis Unit for SED/SMI/COD patients in crisis; sustaining telehealth infrastructure and improve evidence-based practice approaches to behavioral healthcare and recovery for SED/SMI/COD patients; and improving LCMHS EAP staff wellness and early intervention programming to ensure quality care for all patients.
Population: This proposal is submitted by the Labette Center for Mental Health Services (LCMHS), a certified CMHC and provider of behavioral health services for Labette County (pop. 20,916) and located in the town of Parsons, KS (pop. 11,237) in the Southeast corner of the state. LCMHS provides services for approximately 1,900 patients per year, of which 221 have Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) and 830 are SMI/SED/COD patients (BrightEHR). Our agency serves a rural population with significant economic and health disparities. Labette County has significant disparities in education levels, poverty levels, and income levels compared with the state of Kansas.
Patients and community members in crisis do not have the resources they require to receive adequate crisis care, and once the situation is de-escalated to move into a trauma-informed care recovery program. The suicide rate in Labette County is 17.3 per 100,000. Many services LCMHS provide have moved to telehealth, and there is no mobile crisis unit available in the area. Families, children, SED/SMI/COD patients require a safety-net of services which have been hampered by CV-19. The purpose of our grant request is to meet these needs, and promote trauma-informed care recovery with consistent patient follow-up. These anticipated service enhancements in telehealth, mobile crisis delivery, and more will improve health outcomes for SMI, SED, and COD persons in Labette County
