The Pueblo of Pojoaque's Youth Empowerment Project will work to reduce rates of suicide/risk, substance use and mental health challenges facing youth in the community. At the foundation of the Youth Empowerment Project, traditional culture, technology and evidence based clinical intervention will be used to build a curriculum for youth ages 10-24 to address and reduce rates of suicide, substance use, and mental health challenges. Another critical feature of this project is to train adults, parents/families, program staff as well as youth in effective evidence based practices to recognize and address suicide risk at all stages (prevention, intervention and postvention) and build protocols for effective referral to services. Over the course of the five-year grant period, data will be collected throughout the community to measure youth referral for Emergency Room services and engagement in mental health services, as well as for Pre and Post training to ensure that participants are gaining knowledge in trainings and data will also be tracked with youth participant in the YEP curriculum to measure and reduce rates of suicide and substance use in the Pojoaque Tribal Community.
