Improving Mental Health Awareness Training for K-12 students in Michigan - This application is being submitted by the Wayne State University (WSU) College of Nursing (CON) and the WSU College of Nursing C2 Pipeline Program in Detroit, Michigan for Mental Health Awareness Training Grant. The goals of this project are to: 1) To develop and implement in person educational training curriculum using evidence-based clinical interventions of Youth Mental Health First Aid and Crisis Intervention Training (2) Identify mental health resources and establish referral mechanisms that will establish linkages with school and/or community-based mental health agencies to refer school age youth with the signs or symptoms of mental illness to appropriate services (3) train K-12 teachers, administrators, afterschool/out of school time program and college summer youth program staff, and relevant support personnel (e.g., school resource officers, security officers, truancy officers, support staff, transportation providers,) who interact with children and youth to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders utilizing newly developed curriculum in the partnering 17 C2 Pipeline districts and conduct formative and summative evaluation of project outcomes measuring training access, availability, and quality on educational training for schools and community partners/agencies who participate in this project.
Over the 5 year project period, we propose to annually train a minimum of 250 unduplicated K-12 teachers, administrators, afterschool/out of school time program and college summer youth program staff, and relevant support personnel (e.g., school resource officers, security officers, truancy officers, support staff, transportation providers) who interact with children and youth who work in the partnering C2 Pipeline districts of Detroit, Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland Counties. Training these individuals will improve school personnel knowledge of mental health disorders, develop greater understanding of the need for treatment at risk K-12 students, reduce the aspects of stigma, increased confidence in engaging with students experiencing mental issues, and develop knowledge of available treatment resources for the largest communities in Michigan. No other university, health care organization, agency, or facility in Southeast Michigan provides mental health awareness training to the providers of our population of focus. If funded, the WSU College of Nursing and C2 Pipeline program will be the first. Funding this project will substantially benefit rural and underserved populations and will help meet the public and mental health needs of K-12 children and adolescents.
