In 2017, the State of Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA), Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), and multiple community stakeholders shared their growing concerns with legislators regarding the increase of deaths by suicide each year. In collaboration with key state, organization, individual and peer stakeholders, DMHA instituted the Indiana Suicide Prevention Network (ISPN) which is committed to achieving the goal of zero suicides for Indiana. Based upon their ongoing work with identifying the needs, gaps and barriers to achieving this goal, it is determined that all ninety-two (92) counties within Indiana as well as an intensive pilot program in Vanderburgh county would provide the greatest impact for youth, ages 10-24 who are at risk for suicide. This collaboration resulted in identifying five (5) goals and twenty-two (22) key strategies designed to provide the greatest impact for the population of focus. The identified goals and objectives for the project are to: 1) Implement engagement and transition activities for youth, ages 10-24 who are at risk for suicide, prior to and following discharge from acute inpatient psychiatric facilities and/or ED visit by implementing the “Caring Contacts” program in selected inpatient facilities for no less than 1200 patients annually, or 5600 by the end of the project period; 2) Increase the capacity and competencies of clinical service providers to screen, assess, manage, and treat youth at risk of suicide by training no less than 200 clinicians annually, with 1000 by the end of the project period; and hosting an annual “Zero Suicide Academy” to be open to healthcare organizations in Indiana through the end of the project period; 3) Increase awareness, early identification and intervention for youth ages 10-24 who are at risk for suicide by providing QPR trainings for no less than 400 individuals annually, or 2000 trained by the end of the project period; 4) Establish post-suicide intervention support and services to families, friends, peers, and others of youth and provide immediate access and support to families of youth who are at risk for suicide by initiating three Loss Teams by the end of the first year, and a total of twenty-six (26) by the end of the project period; and 5) Establish community and peer support groups for youth at risk of suicide by initiating no less than 20 support groups by the end of the first year, with a total of one hundred (100) by the end of the project period; and implement Sources of Strength in the Vanderburgh county school system to include no less than 10 schools by the end of the first year, with a total of 40 schools by the end of the project period.
