The Urban Inter-Tribal Center of Texas (UITCT) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a successful 50-year history of providing culturally sensitive, community-based services to meet the diverse needs of AI/AN in Texas. UITCT is the only Urban Indian Health Center in Texas. The state of Texas is home to 794,062 AI/AN with 222,053 residing in North Texas (U.S Census, V2020), making it the second largest state population of American Indians (U.S Census, 2020). UITCT is the only Urban Indian health Center in the state. UITCT will continue to champion the purpose of this program is to ensure the highest possible health status for Urban Indians. The services provided through our Health Promotion/Disease Prevention (HP/DP), Immunizations, Alcohol/Substance Abuse, and Mental Health programs are crucial. Many urban tribal citizens cannot afford private medical insurance and live too far away from other tribal/reservation medical facilities to access general health care or hospital treatment. Therefore, UITCT is extremely important to the well-being of all American Indians and Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) who depend on our culturally sensitive medical clinic for primary care, treatment, and prevention education. UITCT has identified the following service gaps related to the needs of Texas Urban Indians: According to the RPMS (Resource & Patient Management System) data, 76% of patients do not have insurance. • Vision exams and eyeglasses are not available in-house. • Radiography services are not available in-house. Patients without insurance rely on being able to access these services through local public hospitals, tribal/IHS facilities in Oklahoma, or paying negotiated pricing rates with local diagnostic imaging services. • Specialist Care follow-ups for patients without insurance who do not qualify for the public hospital care in Texas and/or whose condition falls under contract health services for tribal facilities i.e., ophthalmology, cardiology, orthopedics, neurology, and ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat). Funding from the 4 in 1 program will help UITCT push towards providing services for our community as well as enhancing them for future generations of AI/AN.
