Our poison center continues to serve as a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week, telephone advice and triage center for humans or animals exposed to toxic substances, as well as potential victims of chemical or biological agents. Our center continues to provide consultation for health care providers treating exposed individuals. We also serve as a source of public education to assist in reducing the risk of such toxic exposures. However, existing funding sources do not provide sufficient funds to appropriately cover all of the expenses incurred in providing these services. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The goals of the Georgia Poison Center are to provide prompt, accurate poison treatment information; to educate the lay community about the dangers of poisons, poisoning first-aid, and poisoning prevention; to educate health care professionals in the areas of clinical toxicology; to collect and analyze data about poisoning incidence and outcome; and to deliver quality poison center services to the people of Georgia. In pursuing these goals, our objectives utilizing the funds from this grant are to attract and maintain qualified staff to deliver poison center services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and deliver education to reduce poisoning incidence, morbidity, and mortality. METHODOLOGY: Poison cent er services will be provided to our service area, meeting standards of service quality and caller satisfaction as detailed in our full application. Callers from a pre-hospital setting will be assessed, and when appropriate, managed without referral to a healthcare facility. EVALUATION: We will assess quality metrics as well as caller satisfaction. We expect to manage more than 80% of prehospital callers without use of a healthcare facility. We will utilize text/SMS and other communication technologies to disseminate important information regarding the prevention and management of poisoning and other related issues of interest to our partners.
