PROBLEM: The MARI PC continues to address inconsistent funding. The MARI PC’s funding has not increased appreciably for years and is currently in a period of financial restraint. At the same time salaries, fringe rates, technology costs, education materials and supply expenses continue to increase. Revenue from other grants and contracts lack adequate annual growth. While current staffing levels are in compliance with APC guidelines, unless funding commitments are increased or additional sources of revenue streams are obtained, then reduction of staffing levels is a possibility. The goal of this proposal is to stabilize funding and increase utilization of the poison center by the population it serves. These objectives will be used to strengthen and diversify funding as well as utilize professional education and clinical services as a means to increase awareness. We also aim to enhance social media outreach to maintain educational goals. METHADOLOGY: Additional sources of funding will be explored to achieve a balanced budget in a time of financial restraint. Increased provisions for training and continuing education will be offered to all staff in order to facilitate professional growth. Center staff will continue working with the State Health Departments for further development and implementation of public and professional education initiatives. COORDINATION: The project will be coordinated with input from health professionals represented by the Poison Center’s advisory Committee. EVALUATION: Process indicators of fiscal stabilization include the number of grants and contracts signed as well as the diversity of income streams producing revenues applied to poison center operations. The effectiveness of these initiatives will be reflected by the success in recruitment of staff to meet the center's needs and the maintenance of a balanced budget, with potential new revenue streams. Evaluative outcome measures include: the call penetrance rate from the public, utilization rates of health care facilities, and evidence of poison center activity in toxico-surveillance. Process measures used in the evaluation of efficacy include the number of educational units distributed and demographic analysis of the Center’s clients.
