Enhancing STI Awareness and Prevention among the Oglala Sioux Tribe - The Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation faces a significant rise in sexually
transmitted infections (STIs), with gonorrhea cases increasing by 18% and syphilis cases by
900% in 2022. This grant proposal seeks funding to launch a comprehensive STI awareness and
prevention program. The initiative will focus on education, testing, treatment access, and
promoting healthy relationships within the Pine Ridge Reservation to reduce STI rates and
promote sexual health through culturally sensitive and sustainable initiatives, including
school-based Healthy Relationship Training and a community-wide Public Awareness
Campaign.
The alarming increase in STI cases on the Pine Ridge Reservation reflects heightened
transmission and improved testing and reporting. Gonorrhea cases rose from 181 to 213, and
syphilis cases surged from 4 to 40, affecting counties such as Minnehaha, Pennington, Todd,
Oglala Lakota, and Dewey. The Oglala Sioux Tribe faces health disparities, limited healthcare
access, socioeconomic challenges, and cultural barriers, underscoring the need for a targeted
response to improve sexual health outcomes and overall well-being.
Our program will increase STI awareness and education through culturally relevant
materials, workshops, and seminars across the nine districts of the Pine Ridge Reservation.
Implementing Healthy Relationship Training in schools will educate students on STI prevention,
while local media and social platforms will promote awareness. Promoting STI testing and
treatment is another critical objective, aiming to increase testing rates and ensure those who test
positive receive appropriate care. Collaborations with healthcare providers will streamline testing
and treatment processes. Prevention efforts will be enhanced by distributing condoms and
promoting monogamous relationships, reducing sexual partners, and promoting abstinence
through culturally sensitive messaging.
The Oglala Sioux Tribe’s health programs have provided comprehensive health services
on the Pine Ridge Reservation for over two decades. Our robust administrative infrastructure and
experienced staff support these programs, ensuring efficient operation and effective service
delivery. To evaluate the success of this project, we will measure the reach of educational efforts,
increased STI testing rates, and the reduction in STI cases. Participant feedback, data from health
centers, and insights from community advisory boards will guide program adjustments.
Ensuring the long-term impact involves continuing partnerships with health centers and
community leaders, seeking additional funding, and training community health workers to sustain educational and testing efforts. Establishing a community advisory board and a peer
education program will support ongoing guidance and engagement. Tribal leaders, elders,
schools, youth organizations, and other community groups will be involved in planning and
implementation. Existing community events will promote STI awareness and testing,
encouraging community ownership through participatory approaches.
In conclusion, this project addresses a critical health need for the Oglala Sioux Tribe by
increasing STI awareness, promoting testing, and enhancing prevention efforts. By leveraging
community strengths and fostering collaboration, we aim to reduce STI rates and improve the
sexual health of our community. With the support of this grant, we can make a significant impact
on the well-being of the Oglala Sioux Tribe now and in the future, ensuring the preservation of
our rich cultural heritage and the continued strength of our community.
