The program’s specific aims are to: (1) Maintain a fiscally responsible NFLP account for student loans; and (2) Recruit and educate doctoral students to serve as qualified nurse faculty through didactic, clinical, and mentored practicum experiences. We will meet these aims by the following activities: 1) Maintain a student loan fund; 2) Develop a standard operating procedure to guide the project; 3) Draw down the entire FCC within 60 days of receipt, contribute the ICC equal to one-ninth of the FCC to the loan program, and deposit both in a student loan fund account; 4) Actively recruit eligible applicants to enroll in NFLP program to become nurse faculty, particularly those from diverse populations; 5) Conduct an active training program for students in the PhD and DNP programs that prepares them to become nursing faculty; 6) Disburse NFLP loan funds to doctoral nursing students in accordance with NFLP’s purpose, objective and goals; 7) Collect on principal and interest for all NFLP loans for deposit into the fund; 8) Provide cancellation of up to 85% of NFLP loans for up to 4 years of full-time nurse faculty employment; 9) Utilize collaborative partnerships to recruit students, provide access to training resources, and connect graduates with post-graduation employment opportunities; 10) Enhance didactic and experiential training activities of NFLP recipients to address health disparities, social determinants of health, and health equity for populations; 11) Evaluate the program utilizing HHS Evaluation Policy and evaluation standards and best practices; and 12) Support post-graduation employment and connect nurse faculty graduates to communities of need. The proposed NFLP is offered to students in either the DNP Programs (FNP-DNP, AGNP-DNP and PMHNP-DNP) or the PhD program who are committed to becoming nurse faculty. NFLP recipients will be strongly encouraged to take two graduate level, elective Nursing Education courses: (1) Teaching in Higher Education, a 3-credit lecture course covering curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation; and (2) Teaching Residency, a 3-credit course that includes 120 hours of a mentored teaching practicum experience. The HBSON-NFLP team will include the PhD Program Director and Project Director; the Joan H. Grabe Dean and the Coordinator of the DNP Programs; representatives from Hunter Colleges Offices of Finance, Financial Aid and Bursar, and the HBSON Graduate Program Coordinator. Working with the Office of Financial Aid, the Program Director administers and oversees all aspects of the NFLP. The activities are proposed to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty by providing affordable loans for doctoral students interested in nursing education.
