MHA Nation Tribal Management Grant - The Three Affiliated Tribes (TAT), also known as the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation (MHA Nation) is located on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota. The Tribe owns and operates five rural clinics on the reservation. These clinics provide primary and preventative health care services for the six community segments located throughout the reservation. The MHA Nation first began contracting with the Indian Health Service for tribal health services in the 1990’s, but assumed control of the Ft. Berthold Service Unit to deliver clinical health services in 2008. Through its P.L. 93-638 Indian Self- Determination Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA) title I contracts with the Indian Health Service (IHS), the MHA Nation provides a wide array of health services. These include: primary care, dental, optometry, lab, radiology, pharmacy, behavioral health, public health, physical therapy, diabetes program, health education, specialty care, substance use treatment, a Community Health Representative Program, and kidney dialysis services. The MHA Nation is applying for the IHS Tribal Management Grant (TMG) Program. This project will support us to develop an MHA Nation specific health improvement plan (MHA HIP). The project will align the priorities, programming, and initiatives of all MHA Nation health programs and relevant tribal organizations to provide services tailored to community needs. The Tribe conducted a Community Health Assessment (CHA) in 2024. Through this, gaps in services and healthcare needs were identified. To create the MHA HIP, the CHA data, RMPS reports, SDPI program data, and the U.S. Public Health Service Health People 2030 information and objectives will be used. Developing a collaborative HIP will unify MHA health related programs to improve the health of individuals and the population served. It will also allow us to coordinate the relevant PSFAs administered via the title I contracts to implement action strategies to address health priorities. This will serve to improve and possibly expand services that will address the needs of beneficiaries and community members. The MHA Nation requests $50,000 over a 12-month project period under the TMG planning project type. The MHA Nation Tribal Health Administration Department will work to ensure the accomplishment of the workplan and the grant reporting requirements are within the required timeframes, as presented in the workplan. The MHA Nation believes developing and implementing a comprehensive MHA Nation Health Improvement plan will enhance our ability to provide unified health services that address documented healthcare needs and disparities. The Tribal Management Grant is the best resource for funding our project to develop an MHA Nation specific health improvement plan.
