The U.S. speed to discovery of a vaccine for COVID-19 during the pandemic was reliant on AI to accelerate advances in underlying lab research. This grant will fund start-up expenses for computational equipment for the Institute for Health Computing at North Bethesda which is a partnership among Montgomery County, Maryland, University of Maryland College Park, UM Baltimore, and the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). The computational equipment funded by the grant, combined with the University researchers and the UMMS health care database, which has one of the most diverse health system databases in the U.S., will allow advances in health care across geographically, racially, ethnic and gender diverse populations and will detect patterns in large health data sets that may help to close the health care gaps that exist between rural, suburban and urban environments and among diverse populations across Maryland. The discoveries from those analyses will allow modeling to help overcome similar disparities in the country as a whole. It is envisioned that the application of AI, machine learning, and virtual and augmented reality to these diverse health care data bases will significantly accelerate advance in human health and well-being across the country.
