H+H/Elmhurst is a community-based hospital in a working class and heavily immigrant area, and is one of the busiest hospitals in New York City. In many ways, our Obstetrics unit is the heart of our hospital. It is often where families with children establish relationships with our healthcare services, and after giving birth, they will continue to use our outpatient pediatric department. The funding will assist in payment for a full renovation and redesign of six labor and delivery rooms, a recovery room, a triage space, an antepartum space, three cesarean operating rooms, a waiting room, and an outpatient sonogram clinic. It will also pay for all ancillary spaces including nurse stations, waiting rooms, staff locker rooms, staff pantry and on-call rooms. Additionally, there will be a replacement of the HVAC. Modernizing the birthing area is important to public health in our Western Queens catchment area. Healthy births are the start of healthy families. We believe that a public hospital in a poor and working-class area should have birthing facilities that are equal, in safety, comfort, and medical efficiency, to healthcare facilities in much richer suburban areas. Equity in birthing is an important component of equity in all of health care, and is thus in the interest of the tax payer.
