(JTCHS) is a not-for-profit, Federally Qualified Health Center, serving Miami-Dade County’s low income, working poor and medically underserved residents since 1967. JTCHS provides comprehensive primary healthcare, dentistry, and behavioral health services to the community’s most vulnerable residents in the Cities of Miami, Hialeah, Opa-Locka and Miami Gardens. The neighborhoods of Liberty City, Norland, Golden Glades and surrounding areas are within these cities. The areas are composed largely of minority and immigrant populations mainly African American, Hispanic, Haitian and other people of Caribbean descent. JTCHS provides services regardless of ethnicity, immigration status, or ability to pay. The focus of this project is specific to the JTCHS - Frederica Wilson/Juanita Mann Health Center and JTCHS’ 40 school based health center sites - all of which are distinguished because no or very limited health and/or dental services are convenient, accessible, or affordable to a large concentration of children living in the geographic areas served by these sites. The JTCHS - Frederica Wilson/Juanita Mann Health Center is located in the Liberty City community where 34% live in poverty, 65% of households are classified as low income, 30% have less than a high school education, 25% are under the age of 18 years, and where all of its zip codes (33142, 22147, 33150) rank among the highest on the Socio-Needs Index for Miami-Dade County. While surrounding the center is a concentration of pre-school and school aged children, basic adul
t primary care services are provided in this clinic, pediatric services provided are almost non-existent and limited to WIC and immunizations. The forty school- based health centers operated by JTCHS are staffed with either a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN), and only very basic nursing/assessment services are provided. In keeping with HRSA’s mission is to improve health outcomes and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative, high-value programs, two Mercedes Benz Sprinter Model 3500 - 170WB EXT custom-built Pediatric Mobile Clinic Vans will be purchased with $396,000 awarded from Florida District 24 Congressional Fiscal Year 2022 Community Project Funding. The funding enables Jessie Trice Community Health Systems Inc. (JTCHS) to provide mobile dental and expanded health services to children in medically underserved communities such as where the Frederica Wilson/Juanita Mann Health Center and the 40 school based health sites are located and is pivotal to improving the health outcomes of children and preparing them to live productive lives.
