The proposed SPIP Program aims to reduce the prevalence of suicide among the AIAN communities within the Ottawa County area by improving care coordination; expanding access to behavioral health care. - The Modoc Tribe has suffered historical trauma that impacts their access to culturally appropriate services. Rising suicide rates and higher than average occurrences of major depressive episodes among American Indian and Alaska Natives (AIAN) youth demonstrate the need for increased service provision within Modoc Nation. The proposed SPIP Program aims to reduce the prevalence of suicide among the AIAN communities within the Ottawa County area by improving care coordination; expanding access to behavioral health care services; and supporting youth at risk for suicidal behavior with prevention activities that reinforce their connection to their cultural identity. This program will be embedded within the Modoc Nation Healing House in Ottawa County and operate collaboratively with the Lost River Treatment Center. The program staff will establish community partner referral systems to ensure residents are getting the most appropriate services and utilize evidence-based practices, specifically Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality, to guide their therapeutic framework. Through outreach and program provision, treatment professionals will be able to deliver robust services while increasing local capacity to address culturally competent suicide prevention strategies through workgroups and community education. The SPIP program team will utilize existing coalitions to advocate and organize care coordination and community resources while creating specific workgroups to focus on targeted objectives. The staff, with regional partners, will document existing protocols, available resources, and barriers to support services to be used for ongoing policy advocacy aimed at improving access to services. By educating the community and building culturally appropriate programs, collaborative efforts will encourage treatment, reduce stigma, and improve the support system for those considering suicide. The proposed multi-year program will be heavily informed by strategic partnerships and engagement with community members which will be imperative to its success and sustainability.
