Alaska STRONG partners include the Association of Alaska School Boards, the Northwest Arctic Borough School, and the Annette Island School Districts. Alaska Strong will serve 52 co-parenting pairs/fathers, 104 individuals in the remote, non-road accessible communities of Metlakatla, Kobuk, Ambler, and Shungnak. These villages are home to the Inupiat and. Tsimshian people. Alaska Strong is a culturally responsive approach that has blended together three successful curricula, Strengthening Families (evidence-based for Alaska), Family Formations (evidence-based nationally), and Compass: A Guide for Men (evidence-informed for Alaska). The program offers three learning opportunities over six-weeks. The primary workshops and activities offered to co-parents are 29 hours, with three additional hours of individual case management, and 10 hours of supplemental opportunities such as a father circle, Coffee-time for Dads, and the enhancements to link families to school-based learning. Alaska STRONG Offers: ¿ Training for Family Liaisons/hosts on recruiting, intake, motivational interviewing (case management), coaching, hosting/facilitating. ¿ Six-week school and place-based curricula adapted by community members (29 hours ). Each workshop builds specific skills. Topics include: Getting Grounded & Knowing Who You Are; Preparing for Success; Filling our Toolbox; Relationships and Communication; Building and Working for Success; Working Together/Responsibility to Family; Building Trust; Understanding/Coping with Stress; Doing the work together; Being a Provider/Parent; Feeding our Family; Culture, History, and Parenting; Goals for our Families and Ourselves. ¿ Clear roles, protocols, partnership, and referrals to support safety. ¿ Supplemental Content for Fathers/Couples that build relationships and confidence within school settings. Activities link families to learning and social/emotional regulation. ¿ Supplemental: Weekly Father Circles: Coffee Time for Dads. The curriculum weaves in storytelling, teachable moments, metaphors, subsistence activities and discussion, appropriate for Tsimshian and Inupiat cultures. The curriculum embeds learning into helping fathers and families with hunting, gathering, and preparing materials to live and survive on the land. With few employment opportunities, Subsistence is both a cultural foundation, a meaningful way to contribute to their family, and a necessity for survival.
