PROJECT GOAL:
Since 2004, the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center has been working with a community-based Pomo Language Preservation Committee to realize the goal of promoting the vitality of the seven Pomo languages by facilitating the sharing and accessibility of language preservation information and language resources between all 20 Pomo bands.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES:
The Project will achieve following quantifiable objectives by the end of the 12-month project:
1) research, develop and disseminate a Pomo Language Distance Learning Curriculum Planning Study.
2) Hold three (3) regional meetings to gather Pomo community input in the study and to coordinate with 100% of the existing Pomo language programs.
PROJECT OUTCOME:
A Pomo Language Distance Learning Planning Study that describes: technology and connectivity issues, barriers and opportunities for the 20 Pomo tribes; cultural protocols and community attitudes for and in support of online instruction; the attributes of successful distance instruction of Native languages for teachers and students; the best technology method for delivering online instruction to the Pomo communities; potential teachers and training needed to create distance learning content; existing Pomo Language Repository content that can be utilized for course instruction; resources that will need to be created; model curricula that can be adapted to Pomo community needs; and financial needs and constraints.
This project will serve 100% of Pomo tribal members in the Sonoma County, Lake County and Mendocino County, California (Census 2000 population of 4,624).
